The Tiger Woods Fiasco

Updated on Friday Feb. 19, 2010 -- due to Tiger's statement broadcast live at 11AM EST from Florida. See a new chart added to this story down below as well as my important new, closing comments.
Dateline: December 18, 2009
I don’t like running stories about scandals and celebrity gossip, but as a courtesy to all our readers, I am presenting three charts for your perusal.
The first one is for Tiger Woods and the birth time is apparently accurate and from his birth certificate.
The second one is a morning chart for his wife – Elin. No true birth time is known by me at this point, but her birth month-day-year and place are known.
The third one is a fairly precise chart for their wedding – at sunset – on the Island of Barbados.
It is this latter chart that is quite revealing about why this couple has suddenly and shockingly hit the skids.
Not only is there a 5+ degree orb from the Moon in Cancer (near the bottom of the chart) to the Sun-Mercury conjunction in Libra setting, but Mars in Libra (ruling this Aries Rising marriage chart) has a 6+ degree orb to a union with the Sun and Mercury while also having a 6+ degree orb to squaring the asteroid Juno at the top of the wedding chart.
The 5+ degree orb equates with the 5+ years since they were married on Oct. 5, 2004. The 6+ degree orb equates with their probable messy divorce in 2010 – six years after their marriage.
What this marriage-wedding chart reveals is why people should always use astrology to deliberately choose a good – if not great – day and time -- to get married. Marriage charts – along with the birthcharts of children following marriage – are just about the most important charts that influence us as adults.
The asteroid Juno – so powerful in this wedding chart (by being overhead) – is severely debilitated due to the almost precise square from the setting Sun-Mercury union in Libra (a key sign itself regarding marriage and romance).
Meanwhile, think about this: Tiger Woods is born with Juno near his Ascendant in Virgo, and in a very uncomfortable T-Square Triangle with a Mars retrograde in Gemini overhead opposite the Moon in Sagittarius below.
Juno – even more than Venus – is now well-known in the astrological community as the big player in marriage and the empowerment or disempowerment we experience in our primary partnerships across the board.
Tiger Woods is also born with Pluto at 11+ Libra. Therefore, he married Elin within 24+ hours of the annual passage of the Sun over his Pluto!
Pluto certainly connects with vast wealth and his marriage was a ridiculously extravagant undertaking in a plush resort with big-wig celebrity-sports figures in attendance not just for the day-evening wedding, but for many days, and with three beautiful golf courses nearby.
However, Pluto is also the planet of the underworld, and things that can shift from wealth-power-fame to scandal-notoriety and sexual embarrassment quite easily – if an individual is playing fast and loose beyond society’s “normal rules of behavior.”
Add on these facts: Transiting Uranus just entered Tiger’s seventh house of marriage and primary partnerships during the last year. Uranus – while a great planet offering spiritual awakenings and enlightenment – is also a key indicator of nervous breakdowns, heightened anxiety and stress, short-circuiting of one’s usual behavior patterns, and shocking-surprising events that can put circumstances beyond one’s personal control in the catbird seat.
In addition, in their synastry (between their two birthcharts), Tiger and Elin have (a) Mars square Mars (within a 3-degree orb) and (b) Moon opposite Moon (in mutable signs).
In my work with marriage charting for well over three decades, I have found that Mars in conflict between the two individuals often results in a battle of egos and, often, sexual-sensual indiscretions (by one or both parties). In this case – clearly – Tiger is the extreme transgressor – as he has already admitted.
Plus – the Moons in conflict, between two people, can result in difficulties living under one roof together. Why? Because the Moon has a lot to do with a person’s instinctual rhythms and cycles, subliminal feelings, moods and subconscious needs/desires. Thus, a lot of internal stress and strain can occur (via the hidden, in-depth lunar dimensions of consciousness), and – eventually – the marriage can unravel, if other astro-indicators that are stressful are also present.
Because their Moon-Moon opposition in synastry is in mutable, adaptable signs, they could have succeeded in the marriage despite this polarity. However, to have Mars closely square Mars between their charts was pretty much the final nail in the coffin of compatibility.
We know his birth time and it is appropriate that Tiger’s Mars (the planet of athletics and sexuality) is overhead and yet retrograde, and in this fierce battle with a rising Juno and an obscure Moon below.
This T-Square for him almost completely symbolizes the current terrible crisis in his life: (1) With Mars overhead, he is the most prominent athlete in America (and the USA also has Mars in Gemini, like Tiger); (2) He apparently has a major sexual energy-drive (Mars) that cannot be satisfied within the usual marriage-type bond (rising Juno closely square his Mars); (3) All of this wrecks his home-life (Moon in Sagittarius) as Mars via opposition and Juno via square are both at odds with his usually fun-loving, upbeat lunar force in Sagittarius near the bottom of the chart (his desire to keep so much in his life private).
There is much more to this entire story – astrologically and socially. For example, Venus in Virgo is almost exactly opposite Uranus in Pisces in the marriage chart – and Venus is ruling the seventh house matters (and the Sun-Mercury union in Libra) in this wedding map. It was inevitable that shocking revelations (Uranus) about Tiger’s infidelity (Venus weak in Virgo and in polarity to Uranus) would eventually be revealed.
Plus – Tiger is born with Venus at 29 degrees of Scorpio (the key sign of sexuality and a sign in which Venus feels uncomfortable due to an excessive push toward sensuality). By the way, his Venus is very close to the 29+ degree Void Moon in Scorpio that I have written about extensively in our Top Story section in President Obama’s Oath of Office chart at the Inauguration on January 20, 2009.
This is all very weird because a recent cover of a key sports magazine showed Tiger and President Obama playing golf with a caption about the 10 Tips Tiger can give to President Obama about improving his golf game. Both men – for very different reasons – are larger than life figures right now, suffering extreme downturns in their popularity polls, and therefore on the ropes personally, but simultaneously being honored with President Obama just winning the Nobel Peace Prize and Tiger Woods just being named Sportsman of the Decade by the Associated Press.
Again, this article is provided because the multi-media are all over this crazy story with a vengeance. The sad and traumatic situation for Tiger Woods, Elin Woods, their children, extended family members, friends and colleagues will probably have vast ramifications in 2010, and I cannot imagine these two people somehow reconciling. It would be possible if Tiger’s infidelity was with one individual and that infidelity was now over, but with the potentiality of many women involved, Elin Woods would have to be a true saint to remain in this marriage far into the future.
Next year transiting Neptune in Aquarius will begin a 2-year cycle of squaring Tiger’s natal Venus in Scorpio. The dissolution of his marriage and distortion of his image in the media will surely come to pass – unfortunately for him, the amazing game of golf, and his fractured family. The recent entry of transiting Uranus into his seventh house of marriage also included a square to his Moon in Sagittarius over the last 18 months or so. Thus, his marriage and home-life were already falling apart, and the latest shocking scandals are merely the tip of a deep iceberg of frozen sexual-sensual gossip and innuendo.
Be aware, too, that both of these people are Sun-sign Capricorn individuals who will have once-in-a-lifetime transits by Pluto, on their Sun placements, from 2011 to 2013. The most extreme transiting cycle of all is Pluto alighting upon one’s Sun or Moon (or Ascendant) – considering the three of them as a holy trinity at birth.
So, this is just a beginning feast for the press, the sports junkies and everyone else within the media in the years ahead. Hopefully, some good can somehow come out of all this, but it will take a truly heroic effort – and deeply transformative at that – for Tiger Woods to become the darling again of the Golfing Universe.
P.S. Even though the marriage is only 5+ years old, a major discordant, progressed aspect has occurred this year as the Progressed Jupiter made an off-kilter, 150-degree link to the marriage Uranus placement. Jupiter equates with anything Big (and not always pleasantly) while Uranus equates with shocks, revolutionary changes, and lightning-like revelations.
By the way, people should always avoid getting married very close to any quarter moon phase -- since quarter moons signify increased tension and potential crises-in-the-making. Tiger and Elin were married within the approach of a Last Quarter Sun-Moon Phase, with this solar-lunar conflict happening just about 10 hours after their wedding took place and thus right during the beginning of their honeymoon.
Closing Comments on Friday Feb. 19, 2010: I did not see his television statement live, but did watch it shortly afterward in its entirety.
The chart for the beginning of the statement is remarkable because of (a) how the celestial bodies are located and (b) what Tiger apologized for in his remarks.
What I find truly stunning is (1) the far-distant planet Sedna almost precisely rising while problem-solver and ingenious mind-master Pallas is setting (the same place Pallas is in at Tiger's birth!); (2) that Taurus rises (the sign connected most to the Buddha), considering Tiger's discussion of Buddhism toward the end of his talk; (3) that, furthermore, the transiting Moon had just entered Taurus (sign of the Buddha), but is placed in the 12th house (a spiritualizing position); (4) that the Moon had just made a frictional square to transiting Mars, which is retrograde (as is Tiger's natal Mars) and which is almost directly below (whereas Tiger's natal Mars is almost directly above).
Sedna has a lot to do with the Persephone myth from ancient Greek mythology -- of the young feminine force within nature brutalized by a kidnapping from Hades, god of the underworld. This myth also has much to do with a loss of innocence as well as shameful behavior (on the part of Hades). In addition, Sedna -- named after an Inuit goddess of the deep ocean -- has a mythology connected to a tyrannical father, and the pain/grief he inflicts on his deeply wounded daughter.
Thus, Tiger defending his wife, Elin (who was not present and who may never forgive him), and giving the statement before his mother (who clearly, at the end, was seen embracing him and feeling his pain), and apologizing to everyone he has offended and hurt through his unfaithfulness in marriage was a representation of Sedna Rising and Pallas Athena (the potential problem-solver and seeker of core values) setting.
To realize that the principal planet of individual sports (Mars) was in the obscure region of the chart (at the bottom) and in reverse (think rehab here) and in Leo (sign of kings, queens, gods and goddesses) is almost too synchronistic to be believed.
That the Moon is squaring Mars (from the 12th house to the 3rd house) is a precise example of the mass-public consciousness (the Moon) being offered a teaching about a major religion and philosophy of life (Buddhism) in contrast and conflict with a sportsman gone awry (negative Mars) because of an out-of-control, egocentric (negative Mars) sexual addiction (negative Mars again).
While the Moon was almost exactly in square to Mars -- revealing the still critical and potentially volatile nature of Tiger's relationship to home, family, wife and marriage -- you can also witness the Sun above, having just entered Pisces in the previous 24 hours, where Pisces has always signified possible redemption following hooked behavior patterns (negative Neptune and water sign quality as well as any kind of addiction).
Before today, I had never been much of a Tiger admirer. I love the game of golf, but he always seemed too haughty, prideful, arrogant and willful.
For him -- and I think we need to realize he is a Sun-sign Capricorn with transiting Pluto nearing a once-in-a-lifetime crossing of his Sun during the next two years or so -- I think it took a lot of courage to stand up there, bare his soul, admit his wrongdoings, before the entire world (via the multi-media). I finally began to warm up to him as a person.
I know he was consumed with being the greatest golfer ever since his father taught him when he was a child. Just as we all look back at Mozart as being a phenom because he was composing concertos at a ridiculously young age, Tiger Woods was a perpetual Peter Pan (note his natal Mars in Gemini, the sign of the Peter Pan complex) related to golfing since he was a child.
There is a famous TV clip of a young Tiger (he was probably only 5 or 6 years old -- I am not exaggerating!) with his father on the Tonight Show with Johnnie Carson, showing Tiger expertly chipping and putting balls on stage with a stunning accuracy.
Thus, the child golfer who never really "grew up" in the world is now having to become a man and make amends for a large number of infidelities in his marriage life.
I don't see how Elin forgives (let alone forgets) indiscretions in an extreme manner with so many women. Therefore, if this marriage is saved, it will because she is saintly and not that Tiger will ever be 100% "cured" or reformed.
The bottom line for me is that based on what I saw and witnessed, in looking at his face, at his delivery, at his movements and the welling up of emotions, was a person that is definitely making progress now, and does have a genuine possibility of redeeming himself with the multitude of fans, his colleagues on the professional golf tour, and with his workers at his charitable foundation.
He may never again be trustworthy as a marriage partner and he will never have the number of companies begging for his image to endorse their products and services, but if he returns to his early childhood learning concerning the highest Buddhist tenets and beliefs, then Tiger will be a much better human being all-around in the years to come -- no matter how many more Masters, Opens, British Opens and PGA championships he wins in the future.
Years ago, a fantastic book (with wonderful spiritual and magical overtones) -- Golf in the Kingdom -- was written by Michael Murphy, and this led to various how-to guides concerning "The Inner Game of Golf, Tennis...etc."
Who knows? Maybe in 5 years, we will be reading something called The Zen of Golf: How My Return to Buddhism Saved my Soul by a reformed and redeemed Tiger Woods.
Today, the former God of Golf, humbled himself, kneeled (in true Capricornian fashion) before the world, called himself a mortal man with weaknesses and temptations, and asked for us to have the heart to forgive him. I realize some people still don't believe he is being honest and contrite -- and nothing can ever make those infidelities go away -- but like the old television game show "To Tell the Truth," the real Tiger Woods finally stood up, taller than ever.
