The Inauguration (Including 2nd Oath!) and the Spirit of JFK (Updated!)
New Datelines: Sunday January 18, 2009, Eugene, Oregon and Wednesday January 21, 2009 After the Second Oath!: As I write this update to a Top Story first presented back on October 30, 2008 -- just a few days before the presidential election -- the transiting Moon has entered Scorpio. When Barack Obama takes the Oath of Office at approximately Noon EST on Tuesday January 20, 2009 to become the 44th President of the United States, the Moon will still be in Scorpio, but experiencing a state known as Void-of-Course.
Both in this feature and the companion feature now running at this front area of our Top Story section, you can read more about this void lunar cycle and its importance -- as well as certain astrological configurations in the charts of Barack Obama and the Inauguration.
You will want to pay particular attention in these two articles to where I mention the power of stationary Juno when Barack Obama was born, the fact that transiting Pluto in Capricorn is in the process of opposing the new president's Venus in Cancer several times this year (and for America as well!), and to the radical-revolutionary nature of Venus and Uranus being in a conjunction in Pisces as Barack Obama takes the Oath of Office.
In addition, if you are up to the challenge, you will want to study (and I mean study!), the book-length manuscript I wrote in 2003 and still existing on the web called President George W. Bush and America's Destiny.
This 5-part series remains on our old website and contains dozens of charts -- with the entire focus being on our nation's history concerning presidential security, the demise of Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, William McKinley and John F. Kennedy (via assassination), the security challenges to other presidents, the so-called "presidential curse" that seemingly affected our leaders born every 20 years starting in 1840, and so much more.
To access those features, please go to the following webpage: www.mcn.org/greatbear/tofc.html
I will be writing more articles that will compare the natal charts of Barack Obama, Abraham Lincoln, and John F. Kennedy in the months ahead. You will also find two very extensive features in this Top Story section called "Presidential Sweepstakes I and II." This will give you more background on the extraordinary rise to power of Barack Obama.
Keep in mind that during the next four years of Barack Obama's presidency, the transiting Moon will re-ignite its Void-of-Course placement at 29+ Scorpio a total of 52 times because there are 13 Lunar Returns to any chart in a calendar year. Thus, whatever the potent 29+ Scorpio Void-of-Course Moon portends for this new presidential administration will have plenty of chances to reveal itself to the nation and the world.
I have stressed this before and I will stress it again now:
(A) I believe Barack Obama is here to heal the psychic wounds of our country that became gaping in size when JFK was murdered in Dallax, Texas on that horrible Black Friday of November 22, 1963. I believe that is why he takes over the reins of our Executive Branch of government with the transiting void Moon at 29+ Scorpio -- EXACTLY to within 1 minute of arc and unified with the Sun at 29+ Scorpio from JFK's assassination. I don't believe that any similar tragedy has to occur for this new president. I also don't want to think along those lines and I hope we will stay very positive about what Barack Obama can accomplish in office -- even though we all know he is faced with the most extreme financial crisis in our history (and that probably includes what occurred in 1929 to 1932 during the shocking and distressing first few years that is now known as the beginning of The Great Depression).
(B) There are many opportunistic and challenging alignments going on in the Inauguration chart that I will discuss in the months ahead, but notice that Juno is actually the uppermost and therefore most-elevated celestial body in the tenth house. This is the same asteroid that is stationary at Barack Obama's birth and also at 0+ degrees of Aries in his birthchart (the starting degree of the entire zodiac).
On the highest levels, Juno equates with diplomacy, treaties, alliances and international peace. With the involvement now of Hillary Clinton as the incoming Secretary of State and her work, side-by-side with President Obama, the next 4 - 8 years can alter completely how the world looks at America. We are destined to become the key nation on Planet Earth that fosters agreements, strengthens alliances and works wholeheartedly to bringing peace, understanding and cooperation within the international family of nations.
If President Obama can unite the great divisions within America (healing our nation's wounded psyche) and regain the admiration of much of the globe's population about what our nation stands for, then he will certainly go down in history as one of our all-time greatest leaders. However, hopes and expectations are very high that he can pull off miracles and now we will all truly see whether his invigorating Yes I Can affirmative approach to life can be deftly transformed into a real, rock-solid and pragmatic Yes WE Can national and international essential belief system.
Startling News on Wednesday Evening January 21, 2009: Due to a foul-up by Supreme Court Justice John Roberts in orchestrating the 35-word Oath of Office with President-elect Barack Obama at the Inauguration on Tuesday, the newly-inaugurated president RETOOK the Oath again -- more slowly and totally accurately in the Map Room at The White House with a handful of advisers watching the proceedings.
Although President Obama's legal counsel said that the first Oath of Office was "okay," in order to make sure no one in the country or in legal fields were going to make a big deal about the inaccuracy of the original oath (the word "faithfully" was not put in the right order of phraseology by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court), they decided to do it all over again. According to The NYTimes online, this retaking of the Oath happened at 7:35PM EST and lasted approximately 25 seconds.
I have added this second Oath of Office chart to the group of birthcharts at the end of this article. This is really fascinating!
At the first Oath of Office, the Moon is -- of course -- void at the end of Scorpio. But in this Oath, the Moon is at 16 degrees of Sagittarius and in the fourth house at the moment of the Oath of Office -- what might be called an "accidental dignity," because the Moon is in its natural house, the fourth.
More significantly, between Tuesday Jan. 20 at 12:05PM EST (first Oath) and Wednesday Jan. 21 at 7:35PM EST (second Oath), Mercury retreated back into late Capricorn from early Aquarius whereas Juno moved from late Capricorn into early Aquarius. By going into the first degree of Aquarius, Juno moves almost exactly on top of President Barack Obama's natal Jupiter -- reinforcing the diplomacy and alliance-building energies of this smallest of the main four asteroids.
Furthermore, the Part of Fortune at this second Oath of Office is exactly united with America's Sun degree at 13+ Cancer! This seems noteworthy as the Part of Fortune is a key path to happiness and integrates the Sun, Moon and Ascendant in any birthchart.
The Rising Degree of this second Oath of Office is also quite significant. It is 0+ Virgo -- with a Setting Degree therefore at 0+ Pisces. When President Obama was born, his Juno/Jupiter midpoint is at 0+ Pisces and his Uranus/Pluto midpoint is at 1+ Virgo. Therefore, this second Oath of Office chart accentuates four celestial bodies in the new president's birthchart -- Juno, Jupiter, Uranus and Pluto. That's quite a dose of potent energy.
It will be intriguing to follow this new Administration in our nation's capital having 2 different Oath of Office charts. This may have turned into a useful way to escape the traditional shadowy energy and meaning of a void lunar vibration in the last degree of Scorpio.
Note: Article II of the original Constitution indicates the Oath of Office that must be said before the president takes on the duties of becoming president. The 20th and 25th amendments to the Constitution (a) change the Inauguration dates from March 4 to January 20, and (b) discuss presidential disability and succession. What's important to note is that according to the 20th amendment, the new president takes on his or her presidential duties at Noon on January 20, but you also need to "correctly" take the Oath of Office. Scholars may wind up debating what has just occurred -- the two Oaths of Office -- for years, but at this point we have two astrological charts that may be mapping out the new president's destiny as well as the destiny for America, humanity and Planet Earth.
Personal Notes on Barack and Michelle Obama as a couple: Michelle Obama was born on January 17, 1964 in Chicago, Illinois. Time is unknown. They married in Chicago on Sunday October 18, 1992. Time unknown.
Their marriage chart shows a fairly close Moon-Mars union in Cancer opposite Uranus and Neptune. This four-fold polarity helps to explain the internal tensions within their marriage during Barack Obama's rise to political power during the last 16+ years and the strains that ascendancy has created on their relationship.
Their marriage chart also contains Venus (ruling the Libra Sun sign) at the end of Scorpio -- within about 1 degree of where the transiting Moon will be at the Inauguration. This may help to explain why the Moon happens to be in the last degree of Scorpio as Barack Obama takes the Oath of Office.
In their Composite Chart (midpoint blending of their individual birthmaps), there is a Sun-Venus union. This will always happen if one person's Venus rises ahead of the Sun approximately the same distance that the other person's Venus sets after the Sun. To have a Sun-Venus union in a Composite Chart is to go a long way in keeping the fires of love, sensitivity, tenderness and understanding going for a very long time.

Dateline: Thursday October 30, 2008, Eugene, Oregon and Updated Monday Nov. 3: I’ve been waiting for awhile before writing this feature. I wanted to see how the three main presidential debates turned out and how the majority of the polls were forecasting the election.
Right after the three debates concluded in mid-October, I posted a short feature in our News and Newsmakers section – along with three charts – revealing the supremacy of Uranus over Saturn as the debates were being aired across the nation. Clearly, Uranus above (representing the challenger and radical-change agent – Obama) was seen as easily besting Saturn below (representing the person of the past and tradition-supporter – McCain).
All along – going back to my primary articles at the end of 2007 and in the early months of 2008 (see two important articles on these topics in the Top Stories section) – I showed the resiliency of Senator John McCain because (a) he has always been a change-agent (think Uranus here) within his own party and (b) his natal Uranus is exactly united with Uranus when the Republican Party was founded in 1854.
Nevertheless, even though John McCain has prided himself as being a maverick and selected another maverick figure – Alaska Governor Sarah Palin – to run with him, in this election John McCain equates with Saturn while Barack Obama equates with Uranus.
The reason there is so much anxiety, worry and fear about who will win the election and what that will mean for our nation’s future is that Saturn exactly opposes Uranus on Election Day. In addition, this is the first of five such oppositions between these giant and very different celestial bodies over the next two years. Plus – Saturn-Uranus polarities are rare events with the last series taking place in the mid-1960s during the increasing war efforts in Vietnam and the rising student and civil strife discontent on the home front.
We have never conducted an election when two significant planets like this are opposing each other in a tug-of-war on either side of the Earth. We all know how crucial the vote will be and everyone (or, at least, almost everyone) is hoping for a fair and just counting of the votes (after two rather dubious presidential elections in 2000 and 2004).
The Election and Inauguration Charts
If we apply the same hypothesis – Uranus = Obama and Saturn = McCain – when looking at the Election Night chart (for approximately 9PM EST in NYC where the main TV stations broadcast from) and for the next Presidential Inauguration (which must take place at Noon on January 20, 2009 in Washington, D.C.), then it is clear – once again – that Uranus is trumping Saturn.
Uranus is elevated in both the Election Night* chart (for 9PM EST) and in the Inauguration chart. This definitely favors Obama over McCain simply because a planet that is UP is visible and prominent whereas a planet that is DOWN is invisible and therefore not prominent (relative to the public and mass consciousness).
*Note: If the election is called reasonably early, then that call must go to Obama for obvious reasons. First of all, he is way ahead in almost all the polls. Secondly, he is very strong in the East and if, say, Florida goes to Obama plus Virginia and North Carolina (as well as the important state of Pennsylvania – which really must go to John McCain for him to win), then Obama will be declared president-elect. If the election goes into the next morning – due to it being a nail-biter and teetering on the results of one or two closely-contested states – then Saturn becomes more prominent than Uranus (as Saturn rises and Uranus goes under the horizon), and the advantage for the presidency swings over to John McCain.
The Two Problems which then Turn into the One Big Problem
Here are the two problems: (A) The Moon in Capricorn is “seemingly” void starting at 1:48AM EST on Election Day and up until 7:03PM EST. (B) The Moon in Scorpio at 29+ degrees is void when the next President and Vice President take their oaths of office at Noon on January 20, 2009.
Problem A: This problem is not nearly as bad as Problem B. First of all, there has been and continues to be a lot of early voting around the nation. Because of early voting – which never used to occur – the void lunar cycle on Election Day only adds a lot of uncertainty to the mix, but it really doesn’t have the full impact of a true, potent void-of-course Moon.
The phenomenon of the void-of-course Moon is one of the most controversial subjects in all of astrology. It occurs – supposedly (!) – when the Moon has completed all its “Ptolemaic” aspects to the main, regular celestial bodies and won’t make any more of these “Ptolemaic” aspects until it enters a new zodiacal sign.
“Ptolemaic” aspects include the conjunction (0 degrees), opposition (180 degrees), trine (120 degrees), square (90 degrees) and sextile (60 degrees). Therefore, aspects – widely used by most astrologers – like those of 30 degrees, 45 degrees, 72 degrees and 40 degrees – are not used, computed or considered relevant when figuring out when the void-of-course Moon begins or how long it lasts.
In addition, some schools of astrology include parallels and contra-parallels (aspects connected to degrees North and South of the Celestial Equator – referred to as aspects of declination).
Plus – the four main asteroids and Chiron are very widely used by most astrologers and none of these five celestial bodies are utilized when figuring out when a void lunar cycle is happening.
Nevertheless, due to the historical nature of the void Moon phenomenon and in certain situations, it would be foolish and imprudent to completely, 100% ignore its potential influence. Generally speaking, when a void Moon is occurring, there is much uncertainty (particularly in the material world and concerning signings, agreements, and physical matters) and one notion is that “nothing will come from a matter that is born or starts during a void-of-course time-span.”
Now on the morning of the election, the Moon makes a 60-degree sextile to Mars in the sky at 1:48AM EST. This supposedly starts a long void lunar cycle that lasts until 7:03PM EST when the Moon then enters Aquarius (which, by the way, is Barack Obama’s natal Jupiter placement).
However, during the void lunar cycle, the Moon makes a 30-degree link to Neptune in the sky, a parallel to Jupiter in the sky, and a 30-degree link to Pluto in the sky. Thus, in my estimation, we may not have a real, valid void lunar cycle going on for much of Election Day.
In case you want to know about the first lunar aspect after the Moon enters Aquarius on Election Night that alignment is a square to Mercury at 8:18PM EST. This celestial contact itself reveals a lot of the gut wrenching anxiety and nervousness that will be occurring all over the nation as the votes are being tallied.
The Big Problem: Problem B
Here’s the difficulty in the whole situation regarding who will be the next president: The Moon at the time of the next inauguration is very definitely 29+ Scorpio.
In this situation, you have a very classic void-of-course Moon because the Moon is literally in the last degree of Scorpio and it is also buried some three-quarters of the way through that last degree.
The night before the Inauguration, the Moon in Scorpio squares Neptune in Aquarius in the sky at 10:38PM EST and there won’t be another lunar aspect (a sextile of 60-degrees to Mercury in the sky) until 1:42PM EST on the day of the Inauguration.
Because of the way the Constitution of the United States is written, the President and Vice President have to be inaugurated at Noon on January 20. There are no ifs, ands or buts. It might actually happen a couple of minutes before or after, but it’s going to happen very close to the stroke of Noon.
At 12:31PM EST on January 20, 2009, the Moon leaves potentially scary, intense and extremist Scorpio and enters much more upbeat, happy-go-lucky and enthusiastic Sagittarius. This 31-minute gap is what separates a highly questionable, twilight-zone like and very worrisome presidency from one that would be more friendly, jovial and forward-looking in nature.
The other very creepy problem is that President John F. Kennedy – inaugurated himself during a void-of-course Moon back on January 20, 1961 – was assassinated in Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963 when the Sun was located at 29+ Scorpio. Therefore, whether we like it or not, there is a direct correlation between the lunar placement at this next Inauguration and where the Sun was in the zodiac when JFK was murdered in Dallas.
The odds of this upcoming Inaugural Moon being precisely where the Sun was when JFK was assassinated is almost inconceivable to determine – particularly when there is so much fear that something terrible could happen to another youthful president who represents change and a new direction for our nation.
The bottom line – for those people so hoping for a victory by Barack Obama – is that the next president will face the looming uncertainty of having to govern for a four-year cycle with one of the most extreme and dangerous void-of-course Moons you can imagine.
Note: In the last 63 years, President FDR began his fourth term of office under a void Moon (he died just three months later from a cerebral hemorrhage), President Kennedy began his only term of office under a void Moon (he was assassinated in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963), President Nixon began his second term of office under a void Moon (he resigned in disgrace 19 months later), and President Clinton began his second term of office under a void Moon (he was impeached by the House of Representatives and his Vice President – Al Gore – who also took his oath of office under a void Moon lost to George W. Bush in a very controversial election in 2000). Like it or not, void lunar cycles must be reckoned with and examined carefully.
Watching the Electoral Vote Count on Election Day
I have always loved this process of counting electoral votes ever since I was 10 years old during the Kennedy-Nixon presidential campaign of 1960. Presently, you need 270 electoral votes to become the president-elect as that number is just more than half of the total of the number of congressional representatives (438) and senators (100) in the U.S. House and Senate.
For the first time in 44 years (since the campaign between President LBJ and Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona), the state of Virginia may wind up in the Democratic column. In addition, there are several traditionally Republican states that may also go over to Obama-Biden if current polls are reasonably accurate. These states include Florida, Ohio, Nevada and – possibly – Indiana.
If you visit the following website – www.270towin.com – you will see a large map of the USA with the electoral votes for every state in the union. You want to keep track of how these states are going as Election Night arrives. Currently, this website shows Barack Obama winning 286 electoral votes (a clear majority) whereas John McCain has 157 electoral votes. However, these numbers are terribly misleading because they don’t include the 8 toss-up states shown in grey.
As I write this article on Thursday October 30 – just five days before the election – that website is even showing Montana (with 3 electoral votes) and North Dakota (with 3 electoral votes) as undecided. While Montana moved toward the Democrats in 1992 (when Ross Perot created a three-way race with the first President Bush and Bill Clinton), it is quite remarkable to imagine North Dakota being won by Obama-Biden over McCain-Palin. I will definitely put North Dakota in my “I’ll believe it when I see it” column.
Right now – for John McCain to really have a chance to overtake Barack Obama’s lead in all the polls and win this election – he will need to win all of the following toss-up states: Missouri (11 electoral votes); Nevada (5 electoral votes); Indiana (11 electoral votes); Ohio (20 electoral votes); North Carolina (15 electoral votes) and Florida (27 electoral votes).
However, he would also have to win Montana and North Dakota (mentioned two paragraphs above) AND (!) he would have to dislodge Pennsylvania (21 electoral votes) from its traditional place in the Democratic column. Currently, polls show John McCain fairly far behind in Pennsylvania, but – then again – this is where Barack Obama lost in the Democratic primary to Hillary Clinton. Part of the reason Barack Obama chose Senator Joe Biden of Delaware (neighboring Pennsylvania) was because Joe Biden was born in Scranton, PA and is often considered Pennsylvania’s third senator.
If John McCain wins all 8 toss-up states and manages to pull Pennsylvania into the Republican column, his victory will be one of the greatest upsets of all time. Can it happen? Sure – particularly if the Democrats (a) don’t get all their voters (many young or in college) to the polls; (b) there is very nasty weather in certain toss-up states; and (c) if some kind of voting machine shenanigans pop up again (as has been widely reported during the last two presidential campaigns). Also – Uranus is the planet of shocks and surprises (so the Democrats should not be resting on their laurels and counting their chickens before they hatch). Alternatively, what could be shocking and surprising (a la Uranus) is if Obama wins in a landslide (that’s also a possibility because of the toss-up states that could go to him rather than John McCain).
Nevertheless, if we are going strictly by the percentages and odds at this time, the planets Uranus and Saturn and their sky locations on Election Night, and that people are honestly communicating their voting preferences to the pollsters, it is looking like a fairly comfortable victory by Obama-Biden over McCain-Palin on November 4.
Note: Many pollsters have already given Colorado (9 electoral votes), Virginia (13 electoral votes), New Mexico (5 electoral votes) and New Hampshire (4 electoral votes) to Barack Obama. I believe Colorado and Virginia are still “too close to call,” so those fall into my “I’ll believe it when I see it column” for the time being. New Mexico and New Hampshire do seem more likely to go Democratic this year.
A Final October or Early November Surprise?
Could anything monumental and shocking turn this election around in a hurry? Absolutely. There is really no need to go down a checklist of what these extremist disturbances might entail, so let’s not even go there.
The point is that most television networks want a close race – in order to catch and mesmerize the widest number of viewers’ on Election Day and Night – and you never know what the invisible forces “above and behind the Presidency, the Executive Branch and the U.S. government” (the so-called Illuminati or Plutocracy) might want to perpetrate against the American people during the eleventh hour of a presidential campaign.
Personally, I now doubt anything gigantic will occur between now and Election Day. We have already had the melt-down of the national and international economy to deal with and that has taken a toll on everyone – especially the McCain-Palin campaign that has been desperate to separate itself from the last eight years of the Bush-Cheney Administration.
One Last Comment Concerning the Void-of-Course Lunar Cycle
Barack Obama declared for the presidency on Saturday February 10, 2007. It was the one day in that year when the Sun was opposite to Saturn in the sky and there was also a void lunar cycle happening in Scorpio – just like the one that will occur on January 20, 2009 at the next Inauguration.
When this declaration happened (in Springfield, Illinois at about 10:18AM CST), I thought their campaign must have been so off-kilter to have done this. However, America came into being at the time of a sharp square between the Sun and Saturn, And if Barack Obama is truly here to help heal the nation (that never truly healed after the brutal death of JFK), then all these void lunar cycles may somehow work out “okay” – whereby the two Scorpio void lunar cycles (at Obama’s presidential declaration and at the next Inauguration) connecting up to the late-Scorpio Sun at the passing of JFK are all part of an invisible, propitious plan to reunite and heal America during the next 4 – 8 years.
Note: When John McCain declared for the presidency (in Portsmouth, New Hampshire), it was Wednesday April 25, 2007 with the Moon closely conjunct Saturn in Leo in the sky. There was no void lunar cycle that day – although Venus in Gemini was closely square Mars in Pisces.
What could increase confusion, chaos and just, plain overall weirdness at the time of the election are (a) Neptune making a direct station late on Saturday night Nov. 1 (remaining very influential on Election Day); (b) Venus squaring Saturn and Uranus in the sky on the day before the election; (c) Mars squaring Neptune in the sky -- which also occurs in America's birthchart from July 4, 1776! -- on the night before the election; (d) Mercury entering Scorpio on the morning of Election Day; (e) a tension- and/or crisis-producing First Quarter Sun-Moon Phase in the sky occurring the night after the election.
Update: Monday November 3: Some of you may be wondering why I don't have a big checklist of transits and/or progressions that are going on relative to the birthcharts of Barack Obama and John McCain. After all, shouldn't an astrologer be able to gauge who will win the presidency by simply comparing the transits and progressions on the day of the election and seeing which candidate has the better overall list?
Here's the problem with that technique: Both individuals are going to receive the votes of well over 40 million of their fellow citizens. Massive numbers of people are going to be saying on Election Day "I like so-and-so and want him (or her) to be my president for the next 4 years." Therefore, in doing these kinds of transit-progression checklists, you usually find a wide variety of both positive and negative alignments happening.
That's because you also have 40 or more million Americans not voting for you. Many professional astrologers assumed John Kerry would win in 2004 because it "appeared" as though his transits on the day of the election were much more favorable than those for President George W. Bush. I remember some astrologers thinking the president would be defeated because he was experiencing his second Saturn Return whereas, to me, that seemed highly favorable for the president.
From doing these kinds of checklists in elections past, I have found them highly unreliable in picking the winner. That is why I use other techniques -- for example, the chart for approximately 9PM EST when the main TV networks start trying to make a presidential call on Election Night because many of the states have started to close their polling places.
As we go into Election Day, it is still hard to tell -- in reality! -- whether the race is actually tightening or not. Turnout is a number one concern and always is when the actual election is on the line. Many people forget that the national weather becomes potentially a highly disagreeable factor once we finally get to electing a president.
The summertime conventions and fall campaigning are all taking place with pretty wonderful weather. Then -- suddenly -- we hit early November and there are numerous rainstorms and other weather conditions that sometimes cut down on voter turnout.
Thus, the nation holds its collective breath for the next 48 hours as Saturn prepares to oppose Uranus in the sky (and while Mars squares Neptune!) and Americans make one of their most crucial presidential choices ever.
I may add to this feature on Tuesday or Wednesday Nov. 4 and 5. Stay tuned to this web channel for late-breaking astrological news.
